Answering relocation and work-authorisation questions in interviews
Prepare precise, calm answers about moving to Germany, start dates, location, and work authorisation without making promises you cannot keep.
Employers ask about relocation because they need to understand timing and risk. A vague answer can sound less prepared than the reality.
Separate the questions
Be ready to state your current location, willingness to move, realistic date, preferred region, notice period, and whether you already hold work authorisation. These are separate facts; answer the one asked before adding context.
If you require permission to work, describe your current status accurately. Do not present assumptions from social media as confirmed eligibility. For case-specific immigration advice, consult the competent German authority or a qualified lawyer.
Show practical preparation
Useful evidence may include previous time in the region, researched housing ranges, family agreement, or a planned temporary arrangement. You do not need a signed lease before receiving an offer.
Keep motivation connected to the role
“I want to live in Germany” does not explain why this employer or work is relevant. Connect your experience to the role first, then explain why the location supports a considered move.
Practise a 30-second factual version and a longer answer for follow-up. Precision creates more confidence than exaggerated certainty.
